ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING

BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING (HONS) ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONICS

Introduction

Electrical & Electronics have always been one of the important engineering disciplines within the engineering society. Electrical & Electronics contribution are not limited to areas with applications such as telecommunication, computer, and power transmission but also extended into areas of applications such as in manufacturing, medical, information technology and many more. Unlike other engineering discipline, Electrical & Electronics is very dynamics and sensitive to technological advancement in the world. In fact, most of technological revolution starts from Electrical and Electronics.

The Electrical & Electronic engineers are involved in the design and development of modern high technology applications, for instance, an automated system for an electromechanical system, a computer system, an embedded system, or an electronic control system applied in process plants, automotive, aerospace, and even building service. In other words, Electrical & Electronic engineers are highly demanded in engineering field, directly or indirectly. Thus, graduate in this Electrical & Electronic would be highly sought after by potential employers.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Electrical & Electronic Engineering programme at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS emphasises a strong foundation in physics, mathematics, and chemistry, followed by a thorough coverage of basic electrical and electronic engineering courses such as circuit theory, analogue electronics, digital electronics, microprocessor, and signal & systems. At higher levels, students are exposed to data and computer networking, digital signal processing, VLSI system design, control theory, communication systems, and power electronics. At the final year, students have the opportunity to major in one of these selected areas of their interest:

  • Microelectronics
  • Power Systems Engineering
  • Communication Systems
  • Instrumentation and Control
  • Embedded Systems

Programme Outcomes

At the end of the programme, the graduates should be able to:

  • Apply mathematics, physical sciences, and engineering principles in problem identification, formulation and solution in relation to practical situations.
  • Acquire and apply in-depth and current technical knowledge and practices in Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
  • Utilize systems approach to design and evaluate operational performance and ensure sustainable development.
  • Demonstrate sense of professional and ethical responsibilities towards environment and society.
  • Function and communicate effectively in a variety of professional context as an individual and in a group with the capacity to be a leader or manager.
  • Apply engineering and business knowledge in entrepreneurship.
  • Undertake independent study and engage in life-long learning.

Career Prospects

Electrical and Electronics engineers are normally employed in the manufacturing, automation, electronics, telecommunications, automotive, power generation and supply, building services industries and plants. Graduates could also make a career in microelectronics industries, production management, operation and maintenance, consultancy, research, marketing and technical services. The job usually involves the pioneering of new development, undertaking production design and supervision, marketing, installation and operation of equipment, amongst others.

Programme Objective

To produce technically qualified well-rounded Electrical and Electronic Engineers with the potential to become leaders of industry and the nation.
